Wallflower Press is an independent publishing house specialising in cinema and the moving image. We are devoted to the publication of the highest-quality academic and popular literature in film, television and media studies as well as related areas of the visual arts, and publish over thirty new titles each year. Through focusing on this niche area, albeit a large and growing one, we are committed to providing the widest possible range of insightful and significant texts covering the full spectrum of contemporary moving image theory and practice.

Central to our list is the SHORT CUTS series, entry-level introductions to Film Studies for teachers and students of undergraduate courses. Thirty-eight titles within this unique series are already in print and the series will grow to well over sixty titles in the years ahead.

Parallel to this is the DIRECTORS’ CUTS series, higher-level monographs and edited collections on some of the world’s most innovative and influential filmmakers. Well over twenty titles in this series are now available, with many more on the way.

Foremost in our attempt to comprehensively cover the changing dynamics of today’s global cinema are two ongoing series. The first is 24 FRAMES, a major 18-volume series of concise and accessible anthologies covering national and regional cinemas from around the world. Titles already published feature the films of Latin America, the Low Countries, Italy, Japan & Korea, Central Europe, Spain & Portugal, Scandinavia, Britain & Ireland, France, Canada, the Balkans, Australia & New Zealand, Russia & the Former Soviet Union and North Africa & the Middle East; volumes on India, Germany, China & South-East Asia and Southern Africa are scheduled for publication in 2008 and 2009. The second major series exploring contemporary currents in world cinema is the CRITICAL GUIDES TO CONTEMPORARY FILM DIRECTORS; already published are encyclopedic volumes on North American Directors (now in a second edition) and British & Irish Directors. Wallflower Press also publish the ALTERIMAGE series, edited collections focusing on alternative, cult and popular cinema. The first volume in this series focuses on underground and avant-garde cinema in the US; the second explores alternative and extreme European post-war cinema. March 2006 saw the launch of a major new series of annual publications devoted to close textual analysis, CLOSE-UP. The books in this series each include three separate individual studies on film and television texts, all sharing an explicit methodological approach that illuminates in detail the various decisions within the filmmaking process. The first volume focuses on Filmmakers' Choices, The Pop Song in Film and Reading Buffy. The second in the series, published in May 2007, includes individual studies on Movies and Tone, Reading Rohmer and Voices in Film. The volume scheduled for July 2008 will include studies on The Police Series, Men's Cinema and Weimar Cinema. Volumes for down the line already include studies on such consistently diverse subjects as Digital Cinema, Intimacy and Cinema, Modern Ghost Melodramas, Reading Carry Grant, Revisiting the Avant-gardes etc etc.

2007 saw two new series: the NONFICTIONS list of documentary-related titles, and CULTOGRAPHIES, individual studies of classic cult movies. This year sees two more new series: DEKALOG, bi-annual specially-themed publications devoted to serious film criticism on diverse topics, and imagetime, a list of titles all iinvestigating the moving image’s relation with duration. We also herald the impending publications of the Hitchcock Annual for spring 2009 by publishing The Hitchcock Annual Anthology in late 2008.

In addition to these are numerous other books ranging from the history, theory and social significance of cinema and television to the relatively new vistas of new digital media and games studies; from genre to area studies; from documentary production to artists’ film and video; and from industrial and technical manuals to the very best in film and media criticism.

Wallflower Press also undertake international distribution for the Austrian Film Museum, the British Universities Film and Video Council, the Lux, the Cinema Theatre Association and the no.w.here lab.
