CLOSE-UP 02 Movies and Tone / Reading Rohmer / Voices in Film
John Gibbs and Douglas Pye (eds)The Close-Up series is an innovative and accessible annual series devoted to the close analysis of film and television. Each volume contains three extended individual studies all dedicated to the detailed investigation of the many practical choices from setting and performance to camera position and movement, from lighting and colour to editing and the multiple possibilities of sound that create a film's form and determine its meanings.
Movies and Tone Douglas Pye
'Tone' is a concept that has had a limited place in film theory and criticism, but in our experience of movies the 'tone' of a film is inescapable. This study, the first to focus directly on the concept, argues that 'tone' should be central to film criticism. The emphasis throughout is on exploring through detailed analysis the material decisions that lead to our grasp of tone as a dimension of meaning that is both informing yet subject to moment by moment modulation. Films discussed include Partie de Campagne (1936), Strangers on a Train (1951), The Deer Hunter (1978), Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) and Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988).
Reading Rohmer Jacob Leigh
Reading Rohmer studies three of Eric Rohmer's films from the 1980s and 1990s: Le Beau marriage (1982), Le Rayon vert (1986) and Conte d'automne (1998). It examines how decisions about setting and casting connect to decisions about story, theme and structure: in particular, it concentrates on the work of two of Rohmer's most important collaborators, Beatrice Rohmand and Marie Riviere, the stars of, respectively, Le Beau marriage and Le Rayon vert, who were re-united in Conte d'automne.
Voices in Film Susan Smith
This study examines the creative ways in which filmmakers have sought to capitalise on the richly expressive possibilities of individual star's voices. It places particular emphasis upon the relationship between masculinity and the voice, arguing that there is much greater diversity and complexity to this area than has generally been acknowledged within film studies. Film studied include Mr Smith Goes to Washington (1938), Random Harvest (1942), Father of the Bride (1950) and Gigi (1958).

Time Out
'Taking us into the realms of theory to offer fresh insights into films both past and more recent, the essays don't fall too heavily into esoteric jargon but still provide a very enjoyable read for the film enthusiast, student or historian … Although focuses on the material complexity of films fundamental to their enquiries are rare, Close-Up 02 succeeds in achieving its aim.'
Stephen Yates, Kamera,
'The best introduction to Tonal Studies is the new, second issue of Close-Up edited by Pye and Gibbs … Close-Up offers film analyses based on directorial choices.'
